My Story…
First and foremost, THANK YOU for taking the time to visit my Team page.
I am running this race, not only to raise money for Tommy's Place, but also to honor my sister Kerry. At the age of only 16, and after having surgery to remove a tumor from behind her eye, my sister Kerry was diagnosed with Osteo-Chondro sarcoma. At the start of her sophomore year, when most teenagers are just starting to live their lives, my sister began fighting for hers. She had to have radiation and chemotherapy. Because she was sick most days from her cancer treatments, she had to stop attending school and had to do her schooling from home with a tutor. Over the 3 ½ years of her being sick, she endured multiple chemotherapy treatments, a hip replacement and 15 surgeries. That is more than most people deal with in one lifetime, and Kerry had to do it as a teenager. Through home tutoring, Kerry still maintained an A average and graduated with her class in 1995. Although she was accepted into every college she applied to, Northeastern and Suffolk, she became too sick to attend.
By year-end 1996, Kerry’s cancer had spread and it became difficult for her to get out of bed. I would sleep in her bed most nights and we would stay up late talking and joking around. I now know that those nights were so precious. Kerry’s favorite holiday was Christmas, but she was not able to make it to that Christmas. She passed away on December 21 and her funeral was on Christmas Eve.
When I tell you that losing Kerry changed my life, it is an understatement. But growing up with Kerry as my “big” sister, that was really a gift that is beyond measure to my family and I. I only hope that I can make her proud. I want to face this challenge for her, for all the challenges she had to face, this cannot compare, but I know she will be proud. I love you Kerry, Sisters are Forever.
Over the next few months, I will be sharing the link for my Team page on Facebook and would truly appreciate any donation(s) made in honor of my sister. I will be posting and sharing Kerry's story, sometimes from her point of view and some from excerpts she had written and wanted to publicly tell. I want you to all know my sister Kerry, not just how her loss has affected me, but as the beautiful, kind, funny, and strong person I was lucky to have known her to be.
No donation is too small and I am truly grateful to you.
