My Story…
I have been a Type 1 Diabetic for 31 years. No, I did not eat too much sugar, Type 1 Diabetes is an autoimmune disease and has nothing to do with life style.
It means around 150 decisions made daily, 24 hours a day 7 days a week.
It means my kids knowing the signs of hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia from a young age and what to do.
It means my family is always on alert.
It means plans put on hold, events missed and disappointment.
It means I can never go anywhere without supplies.
It means my husband yelling “do you have gummies?!” when I leave for a run.
It means awkward pat downs in the airport.
I am lucky to have the support of my family and friends on good days and bad days. There is no cure for diabetes but the breakthroughs in treatment astound me. Things like my insulin pump and continuous glucose meter were unimaginable science fiction when I first received my diagnosis. Developments in Diabetes care and management take millions. I hope you will support me and the Breakthrough Type1D team in the Falmouth Road Race this August.
Description
Welcome to my personal Breakthrough T1D fundraising page!
I have joined Breakthrough T1D to raise funds for the millions of people living with and affected by type 1 diabetes (T1D). The money I raise will help Breakthrough T1D fund critical research to progressively remove the impact of T1D from people's lives until no one has to fear developing the disease.
Type 1 diabetes is a life-threatening autoimmune disease in which a person's pancreas stops producing insulin—a hormone essential to the ability to get energy from food. It strikes both children and adults suddenly and changes life as they know it forever. It cannot be prevented and there is no cure.
Breakthrough T1D is the largest nongovernmental funder of T1D research and the only global organization with a strategic research plan to fight T1D. This science is complex and costly, and every dollar Breakthrough T1D is able to direct toward research comes from donors like you.
The challenge I have set for myself — to raise money for Breakthrough T1D and to race — is modest compared to the daily challenges of life with T1D, which involves a 24/7, unrelenting cycle of blood sugar testing and insulin injections to manage the disease.
Please support me and donate to my fundraising campaign. Your gift will make a difference for millions of people affected by this devastating, life-threatening disease. Won't you please give to Breakthrough T1D as generously as possible today?
Thank you for your support!
