As a scientist and year-round resident of Falmouth, I understand how the health of our oceans and coastal ecosystems directly reflects the choices we make. I have also come to realize that the same holds true for our democracy; it thrives or falters based on the choices we make, and right now, the need to protect it has never been more urgent.

It's been well over a decade since I last ran the Falmouth Road Race, but this year, I’m running to raise funds for the League of Women Voters of Massachusetts—an organization that fights to ensure fair, transparent, and accessible elections. In a time when democracy is facing increasing challenges—polarization, voter suppression, and threats to electoral integrity—our collective participation is more crucial than ever.

Falmouth has an inspiring community and I’ve felt a growing responsibility to also be an active participant in preserving the systems that allow us to protect the things we care about. The Falmouth League of Women Voters has been instrumental in encouraging me to get more involved, providing opportunities for locals to stay informed about local elections and make a difference at the community level.

Now is a critical time. With the threats to both our environment and our rights to participate in shaping the policies that affect us, we can’t afford to sit back. We need to stand up for what matters—and for me, that means running to support the League’s efforts to protect our right to vote, educate the public, and ensure that every voice is heard in shaping the future.
