This year, I’m running the BMO Vancouver Marathon to support children in hospice care through Canuck Place. Children’s hospice care provides specialized support to children with life-threatening illnesses and their families, focusing on comfort, dignity, and quality of life. Canuck Place helps children manage pain and symptoms, provides medical respite, and offers emotional support, grief counseling, and programs like art, music, and recreation therapy. Their work allows families to make meaningful memories and find moments of peace during incredibly difficult times.

My passion for supporting children and families began when a loved one received care at the Stollery Children’s Hospital. Witnessing the kindness, strength, and comfort offered to us during that time opened my eyes to how powerful compassionate care can be. It shaped the way I see healthcare and inspired me to give back to families who are facing their own challenging journeys.

Now, as I begin my nursing journey, that early experience continues to guide the kind of caregiver I hope to be. I feel blessed to be learning how to offer comfort, presence, and understanding to people during vulnerable moments. Supporting pediatric hospice care feels like a natural extension of those values, and it reflects the nurse I aspire to be: someone who leads with empathy, honors every family’s story, and brings warmth and gentleness to even the hardest days.

I’m fundraising so more children and families can receive this compassionate support. Every step I take in the marathon is for these children, their families, and the incredible teams who care for them.
