My Story…

Hi, I’m David Penkrot, and I’m running the 2026 Pittsburgh Half Marathon for a cause that means a lot to me.

I’ve been running on and off for several years. I grew up playing sports, so running was always part of the picture, but I really started pushing myself with long distance running a few years ago. In 2023, I ran the Disney World Marathon, and in 2025 I returned to racing with the Pittsburgh Half Marathon. I love the challenge, both physically and mentally. Running has become a way for me to stay healthy, push my limits, and prove to myself that I can do hard things.

This year is different. This will be my first time running for a cause.

While running the Pittsburgh Half Marathon this past year, I saw so many people racing with purpose, wearing shirts for charities, loved ones, and causes bigger than themselves. Combined with how special and motivating the Pittsburgh Marathon weekend felt, it made me want to do the same. Choosing to run for Autism Connections of Pennsylvania felt like the right decision because of my 7-year-old nephew, Larkin.

Larkin, or “Larky Bear” as I call him, is full of life. He is always on the move, loves cars and trucks, enjoys books, and has a few favorite shows he can watch on repeat. Since his autism diagnosis, I’ve learned so much. Before Larkin, I didn’t have close personal experience with autism, and I didn’t fully understand it. Being part of his life has opened my eyes to both the challenges and the beauty that come with seeing the world differently.

Running for this cause is my way of showing support, spreading awareness, and helping others better understand autism. Autism does not make someone strange or an outcast. It makes them different in a beautiful way. My hope is that this run helps promote acceptance, understanding, and support for individuals and families affected by autism right here in our local community.

If you choose to donate, please know that your support means more than just helping me cross a finish line. It helps organizations like Autism Connections of Pennsylvania continue their work supporting individuals and families, and it helps spread awareness for kids like Larkin.

Thank you for being part of this journey with me.
