My Story…
Growing up, I worked in my mom's home daycare. In waukegan, that meant a lot of those children were hispanic and many to undocumented parents. It taught me at a young age how important it is to be a kind and creative leader. We didn't have a bunch of resources at the start of it all, so we were making up ways to create joy and learning opportunities wherever we could. It was so fulfilling to be able to provide a fun safe space away from any of the issues their families would be facing at home.
In today's political climate, I cant help but think about some of those parents and children, If they are still safe, if they can even leave the house, if they are still able to provide what they need to live. it gets me really emotional knowing that the care that my mom provides is maybe the safest some of these families feel.
I could ramble on and on about this cause it makes me sad right now. Ultimately, we need community at a young age and we need people to believe that we, immigrants, children of immigrants, people of color, can be successful and make it far, cause we can!
Description
This year, our goal is to raise at least $30,000 through the marathon campaign, which will cover the essential expenses for our program like student transportation, interpretation and translation services, hot meals, and personnel. Thanks to donations from hundreds of individuals and local foundations, the program is completely free of cost to participants. Support from our marathon runners and their networks will help us keep it that way.
