My Story…

In the earlier years of my childhood, I would sit in the back of a local bakery, feet dangling and swinging off the counter, as I watched my Nonno bake cookies and cakes. I always had a mound of M&Ms piled next to me, so I would be stuffing my face as I listened to him whistle while he worked.

This is one of my fondest memories, especially when I needed something good to look back on when he was in the hospital in 2014. He was slowly recovering from a back surgery, but God had other plans. His health and mobility had started to decline, prompting a further diagnosis of ALS.

Even though my Nonno was dealing with great difficulties, there was never a time I didn't see a smile on his face when he was with his family. Sandro D'Alessandro was the epitome of the saying "family over everything". He was at every birthday, every holiday, and every sporting or school event for my sister, my cousins, and for me.

I didn't realize till after his death in 2016 how much I truly looked up to him.  He was brave when he came to this country at the age of 24. he always worked hard and was dedicated to any job he did. And finally, he infinitely loved and cherished his family.

I am running my first half marathon in remembrance of my Nonno and the full life he lived, and to also raise money for ALS research and treatment options for those diagnosed and for their families.
