My Story…

About ten years ago my body started screaming at me. I began experiencing excruciating pain all over but particularly in my hips, shoulders, and neck. Some days it would get so bad that I could hardly walk. In fact, in my early thirties I often found myself walking with a cane. The doctors had no answers, they thought it might be fibromyalgia but as many people who suffer with fibromyalgia know, it’s not really an answer and often more of a hindrance once you receive that label.

Fast forward a few years and I’m going through my outpatient program for my eating disorder recovery. I find a physiotherapist who helps me to trust my body again. She constantly reminds me of how strong and resilient I am. I go from barely being able to stand on one leg to walking regularly, doing squats and even riding my bike.

Fast forward another few years and after moving back to Canada, working with a new physiotherapist and doing embodiment therapy, I managed to hike Diamond Head in Oahu on my 40th birthday. I still have pain, I still don’t know all the answers, I still have to see specialist after specialist, but I’m no longer letting my pain hold me back from living my life.

And so, I’m beyond excited to share that I’m taking part in a virtual 5K race to raise money for Eating Disorders Nova Scotia. I would love to say I’ll be running the whole way but that’s not yet possible, perhaps one day. But I will be walking and just a few years ago that wasn’t even possible for me.

This is what recovery means. It’s not just about food and eating. It’s about discovering your own grit and resilience. It’s learning to care for yourself through all the aches and pains but not let them hold you back. Everyone deserves a chance at recovery and I hope you’ll help me in making that happen.
