My Story…

I’m walking the 10km to raise the funds needed to provide free moving and storage services for survivors of intimate partner and gender-based violence in the Maritimes. Each step I take helps ensure that individuals and families can transition safely into their new beginnings without the financial burden of moving costs. I'll be doing this event virtually at Cape Chignecto Provincial Park.

Description

Shelter Movers Nova Scotia, established in 2019, is a volunteer-powered charitable organization that provides free moving and storage services to individuals and families fleeing abuse. The organization currently serves the following counties: HRM/Halifax, Colchester, Cumberland, Hants, Kings, Lunenburg, and Pictou. As part of the broader Shelter Movers network, it delivers a unique and specialized service model across Canada.

There is growing evidence that breaking the cycle of violence leads to significant long-term societal benefits, including improved safety, stability, and well-being for survivors and their children. Shelter Movers Nova Scotia addresses one of the most critical and often overlooked barriers survivors face: the ability to leave safely with their belongings.

The organization assumes the logistical, security, and financial burden of moving and storing survivors’ possessions. This allows local social service providers — including shelters, police, and other frontline professionals — to focus on their primary mandates while Shelter Movers plans and executes trauma-informed moves.

Leaving an abusive situation often means risking the loss of personal belongings or facing unsafe conditions during relocation. Shelter Movers fills this critical gap by ensuring survivors can transition safely, retain their essential possessions, and begin a new chapter with dignity and support.

Working in collaboration with local businesses and community agencies, Shelter Movers Nova Scotia supports individuals and families — primarily women and children — as they rebuild their lives free from violence.
