My Story…
Hi everyone,
My journey with Big Brothers Big Sisters didn't exactly start with a profound, lifelong calling to be a mentor. In fact, I was pretty reluctant at first! My involvement actually started entirely by accident, with a Christmas wish list.
About seven years ago, instead of asking for holiday gifts, I asked my friends and family to donate to BBBS in my name. I didn't have a personal connection to them at the time; I just knew they did great work in our community.
Not long after, my phone rang. It was BBBS. They were thoroughly confused and calling to ask why donations were pouring in under my name when I wasn't a Big or a Little in their system. I just laughed and told them, "You guys do good work."
They remembered that. The very next year, a persuasive BBBS representative reached out and basically said, "Since you clearly support us, why not actually become a Big?"
They called my bluff. I decided to push past my hesitation, figure it out, and go through the process.
Now, six years and two incredible matches later, I can honestly say it was one of the best decisions I've ever stumbled into. The "good work" I admired from afar is something I get to be a part of every day.
That's why I'm hitting the pavement for the Calgary Marathon. I'm raising funds so BBBS can continue making these life-changing matches for kids in our city.
Please consider donating to my run! You don't have to accidentally become a mentor like I did (unless you want to!), but every dollar helps them continue the amazing work that caught my attention all those years ago.
Thank you for your support!
Ben
