My Story…

My name is Mark Barnhill. I am a Marine Corps veteran of 9yrs and currently an Active Duty SSG in the Army going on 4 years, stationed at Fort Benning GA as an Instructor. I am truly honored to be running with Team USO at the Twin Cities Marathon , Oct 3, 2026!

Running for Team USO is deeply personal to me because the organization played a pivotal role in my life during one of the most challenging seasons I’ve faced. During a nine-month rotation away from my family, the USO became my lifeline. It provided more than just a place to visit; it offered connection, stability, and a reminder that even across distance, we were still supported. In moments when the weight of separation felt heavy, the USO created opportunities to feel grounded and close to home. Those experiences left a lasting impact on me and my family.

When I later began volunteering, I realized the USO is not simply a program; it is a community built on genuine care and shared purpose. Through serving, I’ve formed meaningful relationships and had the privilege of working alongside dedicated, inspiring individuals who are united by a commitment to supporting service members and their families. While being recognized with honors such as EMEA Volunteer of the Quarter, Camp Aachen Volunteer of the Year, and Central Europe Volunteer of the Year has been incredibly humbling, the true reward has always been the opportunity to give back to an organization that once gave so much to me.

Running this race represents more than a personal challenge; it is a symbol of gratitude and continued service. It reflects my commitment to ensuring that those who serve and the families who stand behind them experience the same sense of connection and support that meant so much to me. The USO reminds us that no matter the distance or the circumstance, no one serves alone. Being part of Team USO is my way of carrying that message forward.
