My Story…
After working at HHS for 18 years in non-patient care areas, my appreciation for the trauma care we provide became personal this year. On Easter Sunday 2026 at 2PM, my husband Trevor went on a bike ride. An hour and a half later, I got a call from a stranger on Trevor's phone. They had found Trevor and his bike down in the road a few miles from home.
Trevor was taken by ambulance to the nearest emergency room. As his memory started to return, we found out he had been biking through a four-way stop intersection when a black SUV struck him. The last thing he remembers is the rev of the engine as the SUV accelerated through the stop sign toward him. The SUV did not stop, leaving Trevor in the road for an unknown amount of time until the man who called me found him and called for help.
When Trevor left the emergency room late that night, we knew he had a knee fracture, rib fractures, and spinal compression fractures in addition to extensive road rash. We also knew we would be choosing to move his care to Hennepin.
Incredibly, when we called HHS on Monday to schedule follow up with Orthopedics, they were able to offer us a next-day appointment. It was at that appointment, two days after Trevor's accident, that we learned Trevor also had an ankle fracture and a thumb fracture. We were able to see a surgeon that week and made the decision have surgery on his ankle to ensure the best possible long-term outcome.
Throughout the next weeks, Trevor saw providers in Traumatic Brain Injury, ENT, PT, OT, and Neurosurgery. We were so thankful for the communication between teams, the providers who really listened to our concerns, and the reassurance we were given that in spite of the extent of his injuries, he was expected to make a full recovery. Our worst trauma was well within the expertise and experience of the HHS providers.
Now, just 5 months after the injury, Trevor is back on his bike. While he still has pain related to his fractures, he is routinely biking 20-30 miles. Last week we were even able to complete our annual tradition of a bike trip to Stillwater and back on our kids' first day of school.
I'm grateful to be able to run to raise money for the HHS Foundation, financially supporting the incredible care at Hennepin Healthcare for all.
