My Story

The Boundary Waters Canoe Area (BWACA) is an incredibly important place to me and my family. From my first canoe camping trip back in September of 2017, it has been my favorite place. I have never felt as close to nature and creation as I do when I'm there and the spiritual connection feels like a warm embrace (even on chilly nights).

My late father-in-law, Mark Ham, has led all of my trips to the BWCA, first physically then spiritually. He passed, suddenly and unexpectedly, camping at his favorite spot and on the very lake that he brought me to on my inaugural trip. My husband, Will, and I have been on one trip to the BWCA since then and Mark's presence was palpable to us both.

Not only is the BWCA an important place to us personally, but it is important environmentally as well. There are countless living creatures that call it home as a protected ecosystem. Save the Boundary Waters is doing the ground work to help keep this area protected for both the sake of protecting nature and so that us humans can continue to preserve this haven. Help me to reach my goal in supporting Save the Boundary Waters as I train for the 2026 Gary Bjorklund Half Marathon in the 50th year of Grandma's Marathon in Duluth, MN.

Thank you for your support! It means so much to me!

Description

The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) is an undeveloped 1.1 million-acre federal and state-recognized Wilderness Area. It is an expanse of lakes, rivers, and forests in the Superior National Forest, located along the Minnesota-Canada border, that has been protected by statute and international treaty for more than a century. This is the sixth most critical region in the lower 48 to protect for climate resiliency and contains 20% of all the freshwater in the entire National Forest System. The water in the Boundary Waters is so clean, you can dip your cup and drink straight from the lake.

Save the Boundary Waters is the locally-based, national campaign led by Northeastern Minnesotans for Wilderness based in Ely, Minnesota dedicated to permanently protecting America’s most beloved Wilderness Area – the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.
