My Story
I am running my first road marathon along the shore of Lake Superior to raise funds for Save the Boundary Waters.
The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness has been a special place to me since I first visited during my graduate studies in Minnesota. When I needed a break from working in a cubicle, I spent a summer leading trips with Wilderness Wind and exploring deep ecology. I cultivated meaningful relationships with my fellow paddlers, connected with the landscape, and loved how it reminded me of learning to paddle a canoe with my dad and brothers in Northern Ontario. I built new memories in this place on trips with family and friends--some of whom are no longer present but whose memories are tied to experiences on this special land.
A few years ago, I had the opportunity to return to the BWCAW with Mary Ruth, who guided trips with me almost two decades ago now. We led a group of women on a writing and paddling retreat and once again found space for meaningful connection and reflection. I am grateful for Mary Ruth's nudge to join her on this run and support an organization that is working to protect the Boundary Waters from copper mining - one of the most toxic industries in the U.S.
My goal is to raise $500. Any support is greatly appreciated. Thank you for helping me protect this incredible wilderness area!
Description
The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) is an undeveloped 1.1 million-acre federal and state-recognized Wilderness Area. It is an expanse of lakes, rivers, and forests in the Superior National Forest, located along the Minnesota-Canada border, that has been protected by statute and international treaty for more than a century. This is the sixth most critical region in the lower 48 to protect for climate resiliency and contains 20% of all the freshwater in the entire National Forest System. The water in the Boundary Waters is so clean, you can dip your cup and drink straight from the lake.
Save the Boundary Waters is the locally-based, national campaign led by Northeastern Minnesotans for Wilderness based in Ely, Minnesota dedicated to permanently protecting America’s most beloved Wilderness Area – the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.
