My Story…

Spinal Cord Injury turns life completely upside down, no matter your age. I grew up a paraplegic - a tumor prevented my spinal cord from forming properly even before I was born, and caused paralysis from the waist down. As I grew, I had 16 surgeries by the age of 19 to deal with complications and enable my body to grow as normally as possible.

I grew up having to look after my body the way most people's bodies do automatically. It can be an overwhelming task for a young person who just wants to be "normal..."  but I had the support, dark humour, and insights from people around me who were living with spinal cord injuries to share how they life their lives and all the information they know about looking after their health so I could learn from them and grow up independent, active and full of potential. This network of support helped me learn how to prevent pressure wounds, how to navigate accessibility accommodations in university, helped me find a place in adaptive sport, taught me how to travel independently as a wheelchair user, helped me see my body as powerful and strong, and showed me the importance of actively managing my physical health so I could have the life I want.

Your donations help us at SCI BC create those networks of support and information that enable people with spinal cord injury or disease like me to adjust, adapt, and thrive in BC communities. Donations enable SCI BC to offer peer support events and information services across the province even where there are no local funders, enable us to host adaptive outdoor recreation camps and try-it days that bring peers together and introduce them to new experiences and opportunities. Donations also are crucial to the important work of our Infoline service, answering more than 3000 calls, texts and emails every year answering questions and finding support for living with a disability in BC. Infoline plays a crucial role in sharing peer support and credible information and knowledge with people who may not have a network of peer support or medical expertise in their area.
