My Story…

This will be my second time swimming in the Bring on the Bay 3K swim. The first time I placed 20th out of more than 700 swimmers. This year, I’m aiming for the top 10… maybe. I’m a very optimistic person.

I’m an elementary school teacher with a passion for teaching math and language through movement. As someone who is dyslexic, I struggled with language and English growing up, but I thrived in sports. Movement gave me an outlet—something I could succeed at—and because of that, I enjoyed school. Being active helped me feel capable and confident as a learner.

Throughout my teaching career, I’ve seen students struggle simply because they’re expected to sit for too long while trying to learn concepts that don’t make sense to them yet. When learning is active and fun, students are happier, more engaged, and eager to participate. They stop thinking they “can’t learn” and start believing they can be successful.

It’s heartbreaking to see children forced to sit through phonics or math lessons when research clearly shows that movement—pairing actions with sounds or numbers—strengthens learning and understanding.

Helping kids discover their strengths is a true passion of mine. This year, through this swim, I want to raise as much money as possible to support children with disabilities and help them access opportunities they might not otherwise have.

I’ve set the bar high, but honestly, if I raise even a fraction of my goal, I’ll be grateful—because every bit helps make a difference.
