Help Jason raise money

On October 18, I’m running the Toronto Waterfront Marathon to raise $1,000 for Matthew House Toronto, a home that welcomes refugee claimants when they arrive in this city with nowhere else to go. Matthew House provides a bed, a community, and practical support as they navigate housing and the challenges of starting over in Canada.

I’ve trained and run more than ever before. By the time I cross the finish line, I’ll have run almost 1,000 km this year! My personal goal is to finish the marathon in 3 hours and 20 minutes, and I’m hoping to raise $1 for every kilometre I’ve run this year.

Every kilometre reminds me of the distance some people have travelled just to find safety. They’ve left behind their homes, families, and everything familiar in search of peace and a place to begin again. It’s easy to take the security of home and the support of our communities for granted.

Many of us know what it means to start over somewhere new, and how much it matters to have people welcome us, believe in us, and help us find our footing. Matthew House offers that kind of welcome to refugee claimants arriving in Toronto, providing not just a roof over their heads, but also a community and practical help when they need it most.

Hebrews 12:1 reminds us to run with endurance the race set before us. As I take on this challenge, I’m grateful for the opportunity to put these miles toward something beyond myself and support people in our community who need a helping hand.
