This is Matthias.

This photo was taken before we knew that our lives were about to change forever.

Matthias was three years old when he was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (AML). SickKids became a huge part of our lives, caring for him with incredible expertise, compassion and love, and supporting our family through some of the hardest days we have ever known.

Matthias passed away in March 2022, but he will always be a part of me, my first child, the person who taught me how to be a mom.

I started running again to fundraise for SickKids in his memory. Somewhere along the way, running became part of my grief journey. When I’m having a difficult day, running gives me somewhere to breathe, clear my head and keep moving.

And sometimes, something beautiful catches my eye—a cloud, a bird, a butterfly, a ray of sunlight, a gentle breeze—and I think of Matthias. I don’t know if those moments are signs, but I don’t need to. They make me stop, smile and feel close to my boy.

Last year I ran my first half marathon. This year, I’ve matured my training and set myself a bigger goal: a full marathon next year, all in Matthias’s name.

This half marathon is another step toward that goal, and a way to turn my love for Matthias into something that can help other children and families.

Every kilometre will carry his memory with me.
