My Story…
I’m running a virtual but real 5K in Paris this October to raise money for the Grace Paediatric Hospital in Sosúa, Dominican Republic. (The core run event will be in Toronto while I am away).
The hospital was the final major ambition of my late in-laws, Elio and Lean Madonia, who spent more than 35 years working through the Samaritan Foundation to improve the lives of families in the Dominican Republic. Over that time, they helped develop 16 villages with more than 2,000 homes, 6 medical clinics, 8 schools, places of worship and 3 skills vocational training centres.
The Grace Paediatric Hospital just outside of Sosua, D.R., is the next chapter in that work and their final dream for the place they came to call home.
The guiding principle of the hospital is simple:
“No child will be refused.”
The hospital is being built to provide care to children, regardless of their circumstances or where they come from. Importantly, that commitment will include Haitian and other refugee families who can face real barriers to accessing healthcare.
The project is already well underway. The land has been secured, the plans and site work are complete, ground has been broken and core infrastructure is in place. Funds raised now will help complete the hospital, purchase medical equipment, support training and get the facility open and caring for children.
This run is also a bit of a personal milestone for me. It will be my first meaningful distance run since I managed to break my leg rather effectively a couple of years ago.
If you’re able to support the effort, I’d be very grateful. Every donation, large or small, helps move the hospital closer to opening its doors. It will be quite an event and an incredible culmination of a life’s work.
Thank you so much, Phil
