Our story…

Hello everyone! We are Mia and Aanya, two sophomores at Brookline High School and the founders of Brookline for a Cure, a club that focuses on fundraising and volunteering for cancer research, awareness and prevention. This year, we have worked hard for this important cause and look forward to continuing our significant work by participating as volunteers in one of the two Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition’s Against the Tide events on June 20th, 2026 at Hopkinton State Park for the 34th year. This event is our next big endeavor towards stopping cancer before it starts. We have been collaborating with the MBCC over the last few months and are now preparing for this impactful swim, run, walk event. We were originally inspired to join forces with the MBCC because of its sole commitment to precluding breast cancer from environmental causes, which is unique to this wonderful organization. However, this role has turned into so much more than a volunteer position. It is an honor and a privilege to have been named as two high school chairwomen for Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition's Against the Tide, and we acknowledge that this title comes with great responsibility. On the day itself, we will be working alongside Cheryl Osimo, the Executive Director of this renowned coalition who lives with breast cancer herself and has been involved in breast cancer prevention for over 30 years. Before working with the MBCC, we were completely focused on the work done after a diagnosis, such as awareness and research. Consequently, we never really thought about the efforts that can be made to stop cancer—  the kind that would reduce the need for the latter. As a result, working with the MBCC has profoundly broadened our perspective of the combat against cancer. Currently, we are finding ways to bring our community together while educating them on the steps they can take for breast cancer prevention. Our primary focus at this moment is spreading the word through posters and social media. We are moving forward with initiatives to fundraise for the MBCC and form a team to make this year’s event the most memorable one yet. We hope to see you there either as athletes or volunteers— in-person or virtually! Join the cause today and help the Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition toward their goal of preventing breast cancer!
