My Story…
While I've been running for what feels like forever, the journey hasn't been easy.
For the last few years, I've struggled with my physical and mental health. For those of you that know me, I help fundraise for nonprofits and charities. It's always got its ups and downs, and as the founder, I care deeply about what we do and the incredible youth that graciously take part in our programming. It's a job I'm very thankful to have, even when the state of the world makes it feel like we're perpetually climbing uphill.
Physically, I started getting some incredible pains that were barely describable; they left me often unable to run more than 5km without stopping. It got to the point where doctors recommended MRIs. While we were able to rule out the worst case scenario, it prompted me to make sure I'm listening to my body and training it appropriately.
With some time in the gym and signing up for the speediest run club around, I've made my comeback. I ran the BMO half marathon in May, and ran a minute faster than the personal best I ran in 2016 - ten years ago. That voice in the back of my head once told me that I could never beat a time that I set when I was in my 20s, and I'm very thankful I didn't listen to it!
I've been keeping up my training, and it's possible that I could beat that personal best yet again. Please consider fuelling my last bits of training as we make our way to the start line in October. Your contribution goes directly to connecting a new generation of Canadian youth to nature and each other - something that is worth every speedy step I aim to take next month.
Description
Running and the environment are deeply interconnected. Our natural spaces provide us with fresh air and the desire to adventure in the great outdoors. Co-founder of The Starfish Canada, Kyle Empringham, explained it well: "Environmental matters aren’t just about ethics — it’s about our health, too. They provide spaces for people to breathe deeply, to enjoy the trails with friends and family, and to soak in the benefits that nature can provide us."
Our team is excited to support The Starfish Canada. This charity actively supports youth voices in climate action and environmentalism for decades, and their success in amplifying young people as leaders in this space are profound. Since 2010, they've recognized and supported thousands of young people in seeing the world through an environmental lens, with those young folks taking those ideas and insights wherever their careers and life journies take them.
We appreciate any support you can provide. You will be provided with a tax receipt for your contribution.
