Our story…
This fundraising goal is very personal for Mara. In May, 2023, their mom found a lump. It turned out to be stage IV Triple Negative Breast cancer, and she was given 8-12 months to live. As of May 2026, she's still here thanks to the incredible team at BC Cancer, but treatment options are running out, and Mara made the decision to move back to be able to support and care for their mom. At the same time, decided to sign up and run their first full marathon, in drag.
Growing up, Ms. Hamerton was a coach, key supporter and cheerleader for Mara's athletic career before their transition, and now has continued to be a fierce advocate and proud supporter of her trans athlete kid.
With this fundraiser, they hope to be able to give back just a bit to what they owe to BC Cancer for the time it's bought their family.
