My Story…
Hi everyone, my name is Cait, and I am running this race in honour of my late cat, Phoenix. September 16 this year marked 10 years since I lost Phoenix, my first pet “on my own.” I got Phoenix in university, and he was the first thing (aside from my childhood pets) that truly helped my mental health (I struggle with major depressive disorder and severe anxiety). Phoenix saved me, more than once, and led me to keep living and finding new things to continue to keep saving me, including running.
I am running this race as my first ultramarathon, in honour of Phoenix. The race is appropriately named for the occasion, and it feels symbolic to run this as my first ultra, 10 years after I said my physical goodbye to my first best friend.
Upon registration for the race, I also learned it supports Animalert Pet Adoptions , which is, coincidentally, the rescue I adopted Phoenix through, exactly 17 years ago today (October 2, 2009). Every race I run is fundraising for a deserving cause, and most of the time, I don’t ask. For this race, support in the form of donations to Animalert Pet Adoptions or sharing this post would mean so very much to me.
Donate to help Cait raise money for Phoenix Trail Races’s fundraising campaign.
