My Story

Supporting Two Weeks of Camp. Supporting an Entire Family.

Every Mother’s Day, I run the Sporting Life 10K in support of Campfire Circle – an incredible organization that brings Healing Through Happiness to children with serious illness and to the families who walk alongside them.

2025 marked my 35th year volunteering with Campfire Circle, and this past year reminded me – yet again – why this organization and this run mean so much to me.

Over the year, I volunteered at a Summer session in Muskoka supporting our oncology campers, working with the Cardinals – junior boys aged 6 to 8 – during what turned out to be one of the buggiest weeks of the summer! I later returned in the Fall for a Weekend at Camp in Muskoka with my Cardi Party and also spent a particularly meaningful weekend at Rainbow Lake with the Jays, junior girls who are siblings of oncology campers. Sibling WAC was very special.

Supporting siblings was incredibly meaningful. These kids are often the quiet heroes – loving fiercely, worrying deeply, and frequently putting their own needs second. Camp gives them something that is uniquely theirs: space to be seen, supported, understood, and just be kids. Watching them laugh, connect, and find joy alongside other siblings who completely understand what they’re going through was incredibly powerful.

In addition, I volunteered across Fall and Winter Family WACs (Weekends at Camp) at both Muskoka and Rainbow Lake as a Family Guide – partnering with families and helping them navigate camp together. These weekends offer families time and space to reconnect, build community, and experience moments of lightness during what is often an overwhelming chapter of life.

Behind the scenes, I also helped coordinate volunteers for Campfire Circle’s bi‑annual fundraising Gala, which raised an incredible $2.6 million – critical support that helps make the magic of camp possible.

This summer, I’ll be back in Muskoka as a volunteer counsellor supporting kids with cancer, and for the first time, I’ll also be volunteering as a Family Guide at Rainbow Lake – a role that brings camp magic to the entire family.

This year, my goal is to raise $5,000 – because to me, that represents two full weeks of camp.

One week of overnight camp in Muskoka for a child with cancer and one week at Rainbow Lake for their sibling.

Your donation helps create moments of confidence, joy, connection, and belonging – moments kids and families carry with them long after camp ends.

Thank you for supporting my run, my fundraising goal, and the incredible children, siblings, and families of the Campfire Circle community. Every step I run – and every dollar you donate – helps bring camp to families who need it most.

With heartfelt thanks,

Bevalah

Description

Bring Joy, Friendship, and Connection to Kids Who Need It Most

Every day, thousands of kids across Ontario face cancer or serious illness – and miss out on the moments that make up childhood. Laughter, friendship, and adventure are replaced with hospital visits and isolation.

For 42 years, Campfire Circle has brought healing through happiness to kids with cancer or serious illness and their families. Through our in-hospital, community, and overnight camp programs, we create opportunities for children to build friendships and social skills, develop self-confidence and resiliency, and improve their overall well-being. By providing play-based experiences, we empower kids to take back their childhood, regardless of their medical diagnosis.

Today, more than 40,000 children in Ontario are living with serious illnesses. With your help, we can reach even more of them.

Our goal is to serve 10,000 kids by 2030, and when you donate to the Sporting Life 10K, you join a circle committed to that vision. Your generosity ensures every medically fragile child can experience Campfire Circle’s life-changing programs when they need it most, at no cost to their families.

Together, we can grow our circle of care and help deliver healing through happiness to more kids and families across Ontario.
