My Story
This is my FIFTH year running the Sporting Life 10K.
Why? Because of Benjamin Black, my son, and families like ours. For those of you that don't know our story: at just 4 years old, Ben was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer called LCH (Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis). After undergoing 25 rounds of chemotherapy treatment, multiple surgeries, and countless SickKids visits, we received the news in early 2023 we'd be longing for: Benjamin was cancer-free. As of April 2026, he continues to pass his check-ups with flying colours, and wears his cancer journey like a badge of (well-deserved) honour.
They say, "not all superheroes wear capes", but ours does. On race day, in honour of his fight, so do many of his biggest supporters. On May 10th, you'll undoubtedly see a flurry of blue Benjamin the Brave replica capes flying behind the people who understand just how much Campfire Circle has meant to our family throughout our oncology journey.
Benjamin is truly an inspiring little superhero and childhood cancer advocate. He treats every hospital visit like an adventure, looks forward to visiting with the staff and volunteers he's come to know so well and is best known for being happy, positive, kind, affectionate, enthusiastic, inclusive, his sense of humour, bright smile and contagious laugh. We're beyond grateful to Campfire Circle for their role in helping to ensure our little boy continues to be such a bright light and for giving our family opportunities to connect and re-fuel on hope, strength and optimism.

Description
Bring Joy, Friendship, and Connection to Kids Who Need It Most Every day, thousands of kids across Ontario face cancer or serious illness – and miss out on the moments that make up childhood. Laughter, friendship, and adventure are replaced with hospital visits and isolation. For 42 years, Campfire Circle has brought healing through happiness to kids with cancer or serious illness and their families. Through our in-hospital, community, and overnight camp programs, we create opportunities for children to build friendships and social skills, develop self-confidence and resiliency, and improve their overall well-being. By providing play-based experiences, we empower kids to take back their childhood, regardless of their medical diagnosis. Today, more than 40,000 children in Ontario are living with serious illnesses. With your help, we can reach even more of them. Our goal is to serve 10,000 kids by 2030, and when you donate to the Sporting Life 10K, you join a circle committed to that vision. Your generosity ensures every medically fragile child can experience Campfire Circle’s life-changing programs when they need it most, at no cost to their families. Together, we can grow our circle of care and help deliver healing through happiness to more kids and families across Ontario. |
