Our Story
Every Mother's Day we walk, run and ride our scooters to help Campfire Circle give a little bit of childhood magic to children going through some of their hardest days...just like they did for our Serena.
Just weeks before our sweet girl's 3rd birthday, Serena was diagnosed with cancer. Her days, which were once filled with daycare and trips to the park, quickly became defined by hospital admissions, surgeries, chemotherapy, transfusions and isolations. It was hard to see how Serena would get to just be a kid in the midst of all of this but Campfire Circle brought the magic of childhood back to Serena and all of the children at the hospital. It didn't matter if we were in the hospital for a week long stay or just there for the afternoon, there was always a fun craft, activity or singalong happening where we watched Serena light up with excitement and joy in the middle of a very grown up experience. This is a priceless gift that our family could never repay.
I once read a quote from another family that went something like this:
"Sick Kids healed my child's body but Campfire Circle healed her soul"
I couldn't say it better myself.
Serena's treatment ended over 7 years ago but she still enjoys Campfire Circle experiences throughout the year and can't wait for another week at sleepaway camp this summer. This organization helps our girl shine brighter with each moment she spends with them.
Thank you for your support!!
Description
Bring Joy, Friendship, and Connection to Kids Who Need It Most
Every day, thousands of kids across Ontario face cancer or serious illness – and miss out on the moments that make up childhood. Laughter, friendship, and adventure are replaced with hospital visits and isolation.
For 42 years, Campfire Circle (formerly Camp Ooch & Camp Trillium) has brought healing through happiness to kids with cancer or serious illness and their families. Through our in-hospital, community, and overnight camp programs, we create opportunities for children to build friendships and social skills, develop self-confidence and resiliency, and improve their overall well-being. By providing play-based experiences, we empower kids to take back their childhood, regardless of their medical diagnosis.
But today, more than 40,000 children in Ontario are living with serious illnesses. With your help, we can reach even more of them.
Our goal is to serve 10,000 kids by 2030, and when you donate to the Sporting Life 10K, you join a circle committed to that vision. Your generosity ensures every medically fragile child can experience Campfire Circle’s life-changing programs when they need it most, at no cost to their families.
Together, we can grow our circle of care and help deliver healing through happiness to more kids and families across Ontario.
