Our Story
This is Team Chill Will's 4th year participating in the Sporting Life 10k and fundraising for Campfire Circle.
Will was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) at only 7 days old. He spent the first 7 months of life as an in-patient at SickKids undergoing 5 rounds of chemotherapy. He has been cancer-free since August 2022 and completed treatment in January 2023. Will continues to be medically complex (he is non-verbal and has since been diagnosed with epilepsy and autism), but he does not let it slow him down. He is a busy 3.5 year-old toddler who loves his preschool, playing in park and building with magna tiles. He has a wicked sense of humour.
Will was 8 months old at his first weekend at camp (WAC). It was only a couple weeks after his discharge from SickKids. He had a central line, was still on several medications and was still immunocompromised. Campfire Circle not only provided us with a medically safe place to go as a family, but it also gave us a community which we have relied on in the years since that first WAC.
We have spent the last 3 summers at camp as a family and have watched Will grow up alongside other campers. We have developed friendships with many other families and have watched and supported their journeys. The memories made at camp carry us through the year. It truly is healing through happiness.
Campfire Circle is a magical place and one we are thrilled to support again this year.
Description
Bring Joy, Friendship, and Connection to Kids Who Need It Most
Every day, thousands of kids across Ontario face cancer or serious illness – and miss out on the moments that make up childhood. Laughter, friendship, and adventure are replaced with hospital visits and isolation.
For 42 years, Campfire Circle (formerly Camp Ooch & Camp Trillium) has brought healing through happiness to kids with cancer or serious illness and their families. Through our in-hospital, community, and overnight camp programs, we create opportunities for children to build friendships and social skills, develop self-confidence and resiliency, and improve their overall well-being. By providing play-based experiences, we empower kids to take back their childhood, regardless of their medical diagnosis.
But today, more than 40,000 children in Ontario are living with serious illnesses. With your help, we can reach even more of them.
Our goal is to serve 10,000 kids by 2030, and when you donate to the Sporting Life 10K, you join a circle committed to that vision. Your generosity ensures every medically fragile child can experience Campfire Circle’s life-changing programs when they need it most, at no cost to their families.
Together, we can grow our circle of care and help deliver healing through happiness to more kids and families across Ontario.
