Raise money for Save Popponesset Bay
Save Popponesset Bay owns local waterways and a barrier beach in the Town of Mashpee to preserve and protect the area for future generations. This barrier beach is a protected species habitat that allows for Federally protected Ploving Pipers and Terns to survive. This barrier beach not only protects the local community from Mother Nature but also creates a proper flushing current from Popponesset Bay to Vineyard Sound, maintaining water quality for the area.
Save Popponesset Bay (SPB) is thrilled to return to the Falmouth Road Race for 2026! As a 501(c)(3) non-profit, SPB is committed to conserving the Popponesset Bay ecosystem, including the Popponesset Spit shoreline and surrounding waterways that properly flush the Bay to maintain water quality in the area. The Popponesset Spit barrier beach is a protected species habitat that allows for Federally protected Piping Plovers and Terns to flourish.
2025 was a big year for our organization as we kicked off execution of the "Longer, Wider, Deeper Project", an initiative aimed at dredging local waterways and depositing 70,000 cubic yards of sand onto Popponesset Spit. Successful completion of the project will enable:
- Enhanced navigability of channels
- Increased resilience of the Spit barrier beach against future weather events
- Improved recreation in the nature preserve
So far, we’ve been able to make significant progress, dredging ~57,000 cubic yards of sand that have been placed directly on the Spit. The funds raised by our 2025 Falmouth Road Race team directly contributed to this success. As we look forward to 2026 and beyond, it is important that we continue our fundraising momentum to expand on and sustain the significant progress made to date.
Please consider making a donation to support our mission to protect our local marine ecosystem and preserve its natural wonder for generations to come!
