Why this is important to me!
As most of you know I am a breast cancer survivor, and on top of that I know many people who have been diagnosed with cancer and, sadly, I know many people who have passed on from cancer. I am dedicating this year's race to my friend Darcie Gauthier who was originally diagnosed with brain cancer in 2009, and sadly had a recurrence at Stage IV, and passed away on 2/14/26 after a three year battle.
I am also running in memory of my mom Karen(passed in June 2022), cousin Kendra Iller (passed in January 2022), and best friend Sara DeMonti(passed in August 2021) who all passed on due to various forms of cancer.
DetecTogether is a non-profit organization that teaches methods of detecting cancer early to schools, community groups, businesses, and high-risk groups in our communities, like our local firefighters. We know this life-saving information works as we have seen it first hand after we presented at a local high school and a few months later a student knew the steps to take to get his cancer diagnosed.
I love to volunteer with DetecTogether; I have been a "Survivor Speaker" with them since 2011, just a year after I was deemed cancer free. Volunteering with this organization helped give my cancer a purpose! I feel as though I have some kind of internal knowledge that I can share with others that can hopefully prevent them, or better prepare them, if cancer becomes a part of their life.
Description
The worst cancer diagnosis is a late one. That's why support for DetecTogether is so crucial. They teach people how to detect cancer early when it’s most treatable and survivable.
40% of the population will face a cancer diagnosis. One of the most important factors in surviving cancer is the stage at which it is first detected. Early detection makes all the difference.
DetecTogether provides a simple, powerful strategy for detecting cancer early. They educate in schools, present to community groups, and reach out to those at high risk, such as firefighters, empowering people to achieve better healthcare overall.
Their life-saving presentations and information are delivered at no cost, thanks to the kindness and generosity of donors.
Consider supporting this cause. Together, we can make a difference in the fight against cancer.
