Why am I running for WHOI and ocean science?
I was lucky enough to have 2 marine biologists for parents, and grew up in the Woods Hole science community. I often knew the scientific names of sea creatures before the common names, which my classmates did not find nearly as impressive as I thought it was. Having such incredible hands-on access to high-quality research absolutely shaped my critical thinking skills, my understanding of the importance of research, and my wonder for the ocean and all it has to offer (even if I disappointed my parents and didn't become an ocean scientist myself).
What do I love about the ocean?
I love that every time we think we know something to be true in the ocean, the ocean proves us wrong. It has some of the most beautiful examples of symbiotic relationships that exist, something I think we can all learn from.
What do I enjoy about running?
Running is one of two activities where my brain is truly quiet, the other being snorkeling. Since I decided to sadly not make snorkeling my career, running is how I handle stress, make friends, and explore new environments.
What else would you like to share about yourself?
In my work life, I am a Pediatric Occupational Therapist, and help children with disabilities become more independent in their daily lives. I recently had a client with a special interest in the ocean, and we spent many sessions comparing ocean fun facts, so don't worry Mom and Dad your teaching didn't all go to waste!
