My Story…

My son Wally (6.5) was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes just after his 4th birthday. Shortly before that, a local mom, Caroline, was raising awareness through Breakthrough T1D. Because of her posts, I recognized Wally’s symptoms right away. Within an hour of a simple urine test at his pediatrician's office, we were on our way to Boston Children’s Hospital for his diagnosis and care. Her advocacy may have saved his life, or at least prevented a dangerous DKA episode.

Managing T1D in our young child is relentless. It requires constant vigilance, essentially doing the work of a pancreas 24/7, just to keep our child safe. While we’ve adapted, diabetes is always on our minds.

Through our involvement with Breakthrough T1D, we’ve found community, support, and hope. We are incredibly fortunate to have access to insulin, technology, and excellent care, resources many around the world still lack.

That’s why I’m running the Falmouth Road Race this year. I’m inspired by promising research, including the Eledon trial funded by Breakthrough T1D where participants have achieved insulin independence (!!!!) after islet cell transplant using a new drug, Tegoprubart. Progress like this gives us real hope for Wally’s future.

I’m running to raise both funds and awareness. Early diagnosis saves lives. Please learn the signs of T1D: excessive thirst, frequent urination, weight loss, fatigue, and fruity breath. T1D is also often misdiagnosed as type 2 in adults, as happened to Lance Bass of NSYNC, so proper testing matters.

If you’re able, please consider donating. Every dollar supports research, improves access to care, and brings us closer to a cure.

Thank you for being part of our support system. It truly means everything to us.

Description

Welcome to my personal Breakthrough T1D fundraising page!

I have joined Breakthrough T1D to raise funds for the millions of people living with and affected by type 1 diabetes (T1D). The money I raise will help Breakthrough T1D fund critical research to progressively remove the impact of T1D from people's lives until no one has to fear developing the disease.

Type 1 diabetes is a life-threatening autoimmune disease in which a person's pancreas stops producing insulin—a hormone essential to the ability to get energy from food. It strikes both children and adults suddenly and changes life as they know it forever. It cannot be prevented and there is no cure.

Breakthrough T1D is the largest nongovernmental funder of T1D research and the only global organization with a strategic research plan to fight T1D. This science is complex and costly, and every dollar Breakthrough T1D is able to direct toward research comes from donors like you.

The challenge I have set for myself — to raise money for Breakthrough T1D and to race — is modest compared to the daily challenges of life with T1D, which involves a 24/7, unrelenting cycle of blood sugar testing and insulin injections to manage the disease.

Please support me and donate to my fundraising campaign. Your gift will make a difference for millions of people affected by this devastating, life-threatening disease. Won't you please give to Breakthrough T1D as generously as possible today?

Thank you for your support!
