I will be running the Falmouth Road Race for the first time this year for Tommy's Place. Tommy's Place is an organization which owns and operates two magical vacation homes for New England kids fighting cancer. These kids are invited, along with their family and friends, to come spend a week free of charge at one of these two vacation homes. These homes are designed wholeheartedly with kids in mind. They truly are magical in themselves and provide endless opportunities for discovery and joy in their many rooms. Most importantly, the Tommy's Place vacations provide kids who are shouldering much too much in their young lives, a chance to try to step out of all the treatments and medical appointments for a week, to just be a kid and have fun.

Tommy's Place has a special spot in my heart personally as I have family who have been impacted by childhood cancer.  My cousin's son, Luke Ahern, received a diagnosis of Stage 4 Neuroblastoma when he was just 16 months old.  Luke, along with his family, was invited to Tommy's Place and vacationed at the Falmouth location for a week in August 2024.  I had the opportunity to see first-hand the joy, excitement, and freedom that these vacations provide kids who are fighting cancer.  In the time I spent in the house with them on this vacation, I got to witness their friends and our family who all love and support Luke and the whole Ahern family, have the chance to spend time with one another and see Luke get the opportunity to just be kid and enjoy himself.

Luke is now celebrating over two years cancer free!!

This vacation was memorable to me.  The effort of all of the volunteers who keep up the house in between families staying there, and all of the donations they receive in order to maintain the properties and pay for these vacations for these kids and their families, is really awe inspiring.  There are so many people and organizations working hard behind the scenes to make sure these trips continue for New England kids fighting cancer.  My hope in running for Tommy's Place this year is to bring more attention to the work they do, the joy they bring, and all the amazing people involved in making these trips a reality.
