My Story…
My son Zayn is my light, my love, and my hero. Zayn was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes in March of 2023 at 20 months old. It is an understatement to say we were blindsided by his diagnosis. That we know of, neither my husband nor I had any first hand experience with Type 1 previously. Zayn's diagnosis completely changed our lives, but we have learned to embrace the challenging hand of cards our son has been dealt. Zayn is a remarkable person, and it is my biggest honor and joy to be his mama. The resilience, strength, curiosity, perspective, and joy this kid shows us every day is beyond. I love Zayn so much, and I am so lucky he is my reason for running the Falmouth Road Race.
While I knew nothing about Type 1 before March 2023, I have since become a self-taught, at home, non-board certified Mamacrinologist. Beyond what's involved in acting like my son's pancreas, I've also come to learn what an immense impact Type 1 has on so many people. I am very open about our lives and Type 1, and when I tell people about Zayn's Type 1, I always start by asking if they have any experience with Type 1. I often hear about a friend, a relative, a neighbor, and I've also heard, "I am Type 1 myself."
Type 1 is such a mystery in so many ways, but it really hits me how often this condition goes unseen. It can feel so isolating when you're not seen as your full self. Type 1 requires constant 24/7 management, is unpredictable, and rears its head in mostly invisible ways. Managing Type 1 can feel like living in an alternate universe alongside the real world with everyone else.
I run the Falmouth Road Race for Breakthrough Type 1 Diabetes to bring visibility to the incredible feat every person living with Type 1 accomplishes each day. Being a pancreas is far from easy, but a person living with Type 1 intentionally choses life every day by managing this disease. There is no cure for Type 1, and set backs, disappointments, and failure are a routine part of living with Type 1. When seen, the resilience shown by a person living with Type 1 is truly remarkable. People living with Type 1 get right back up again, and again, and again, in perpetuity.
Please join me in supporting the Type 1 Community and Breakthrough T1D as we fight for a cure. Breakthrough Type 1 Diabetes does so much to improve the lives of all people living with Type 1 Diabetes. They have been a constant source of support for my family since Zayn's diagnosis, and it's an honor to run this race on their behalf.
Description
Welcome to my personal Breakthrough T1D fundraising page!
I have joined Breakthrough T1D to raise funds for the millions of people living with and affected by type 1 diabetes (T1D). The money I raise will help Breakthrough T1D fund critical research to progressively remove the impact of T1D from people's lives until no one has to fear developing the disease.
Type 1 diabetes is a life-threatening autoimmune disease in which a person's pancreas stops producing insulin—a hormone essential to the ability to get energy from food. It strikes both children and adults suddenly and changes life as they know it forever. It cannot be prevented and there is no cure.
Breakthrough T1D is the largest nongovernmental funder of T1D research and the only global organization with a strategic research plan to fight T1D. This science is complex and costly, and every dollar Breakthrough T1D is able to direct toward research comes from donors like you.
The challenge I have set for myself — to raise money for Breakthrough T1D and to race — is modest compared to the daily challenges of life with T1D, which involves a 24/7, unrelenting cycle of blood sugar testing and insulin injections to manage the disease.
Please support me and donate to my fundraising campaign. Your gift will make a difference for millions of people affected by this devastating, life-threatening disease. Won't you please give to Breakthrough T1D as generously as possible today?
Thank you for your support!
