My Story…
On August 16th, I'll once again be lacing up my sneakers for the Falmouth Road Race in memory of my brother-in-law, Ryan Richards. This year, however, is especially meaningful because I'll be joined by two first-time runners: my son, Lincoln, and Ryan's daughter, Nora.
For years, I've run this race in Ryan's honor. The seven-mile course from Woods Hole to Falmouth Heights was his Super Bowl, often falling on his birthday weekend. As an avid runner myself, I've always felt a special connection to Ryan on race day. The crowds, the energy, and the community spirit make his presence feel incredibly close.
In June 2015, Ryan was diagnosed with NUT Midline Carcinoma, a rare and aggressive cancer. Despite the devastating prognosis, he fought with remarkable courage, supported by an incredible network of family and friends. That summer, he celebrated his 40th birthday and welcomed his daughter, Nora, into the world. Just two months later, he passed away.
Ryan lived life with unmatched enthusiasm. He was the life of every party, had an unforgettable laugh, and could always be counted on to get people dancing. When it came to running, Ryan once said, "I ran every road race as fast as I could, because if I paced myself, I wouldn't be able to make up the time later in the race." In many ways, he lived his life the same way—full speed ahead, embracing every moment.
In the years since his passing, the Ryan Richards Foundation has worked tirelessly to carry forward that spirit. The foundation supports local families facing cancer, funds rare cancer research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and provides scholarships to graduating seniors from Falmouth High School. Since 2016, the foundation has helped dozens of families, funded groundbreaking research, and awarded scholarships to deserving students.
This year feels especially significant. Nora is now 10 years old and running the race her father loved. Lincoln, who has heard countless stories about his Uncle Ryan, will be running beside her. Watching these kids take part in something that meant so much to Ryan is a reminder that while cancer took him far too soon, his impact continues to ripple through all of us.
Ryan started this race years ago. This year, we'll run it together for him.
If you're able, please consider supporting the Ryan Richards Foundation. Every donation helps honor Ryan's legacy while making a meaningful difference for families facing cancer and for the future of rare cancer research.
Thank you for your support.
