I have always been in awe of the courage and strength of parents with children suffering from chronic illness.

As a physician, I have watched parents learn (without ever asking to)  how to be a doctor, a nurse, a physical therapist, a respiratory therapist, an intensivist, a relentless advocate, all at once. These parents fight every single day. They laugh and they cry. And they push every provider around them to be at their absolute best.

Whether their child has cystic fibrosis, a metabolic disease, cancer, or a neurodevelopmental condition, these parents carry a weight most of us will never fully understand — and they carry it with a strength that is humbling.

I am usually running for the cystic fibrosis community, a cause that has defined much of my career and my heart. But for the past several years, I have also been running for the Courageous Parents Network, and with the Casey family, who exemplify everything this organization stands for.

There is no better organization supporting some of the most extraordinary people in our community. These are families who need our support, and who deserve every bit of strength we can offer in return.
