Hello, Friends of The Boston House!
I am Leo Godfrey, 18-year-old proud older brother of Joseph Godfrey, who is this year's VIP runner for The Boston House. I am running to accompany and support my kid brother who is battling DMG, a grade IV brain glioma for which there is no known cancer cure.
I watched Joseph last summer as he helicoptered with my mom from NH to Boston Children's for emergency neurosurgery. He would go through three more surgeries in addition to other bedside procedures that would frighten the bravest among us. He also survived a month and a half of radiation treatments and now suffers a vision cut in his right eye, cognition deficits, and sluggishness. His current regimen of therapies and countless medical appointments rob him of energy, time, activities, and a teenhood that other boys his age are able to enjoy. Even so, my kid brother's joyful resignation and resilience is nothing short of heroic.
As a rugby player, I tower over my baby brother, and my body weight is almost twice his own. While I practice fortitude, discipline, brotherhood, hard work, and good sportsmanship to defeat the opponent well on the rugby pitch, I have not yet mastered the virtues Joseph has championed on his battlefield against cancer. He is truly the underdog, competing in a most unkind and unfair match against a horrible disease. He is compelled to ponder too young what it's like at the end of life and what comes after. Joseph may be four years my junior, but he is my hero.
I know, and Joe knows, that this 7-mile race will be difficult for him because his strength and stamina have been steadily declining. I am amazed he still wants to run. I know that running with cancer and reaching that finish line will mean so much more to him because he wants to inspire others and to encourage the world not to let the cancers of life beat you.
Please support me, my little bro, and two childhood friends from our town (the Holt brothers) who will also be partaking in the Falmouth Road Race this August. We are running for Joseph, we are running for the families who stay at The Boston House, we are running against cancer, and we are running for hope. Thank you so much for your donations.
