My Story…
I am honored to run the Falmouth Road Race to support research on the prevention and treatment of lymphedema in individuals with breast cancer.
What is lymphedema? Lymphedema is swelling of the arm, breast, or chest wall, and affects ~8–40% of breast cancer survivors, depending on the type of axillary surgery, radiation exposure, and other individual risk factors.
This condition results from injury to the lymphatic system during cancer treatment and can become a chronic, lifelong issue with a significant impact on physical function, body image, emotional well-being, and overall quality of life.
As a breast oncologist with a deep commitment to breast cancer survivorship, I am honored to run the Falmouth Road Race this year in support of this important cause. Massachusetts General Hospital is a leading center for research focused on better understanding, preventing, and treating breast cancer–related lymphedema.
I am particularly excited to highlight the important role of PHYSICAL ACTIVITY in reducing the risk of lymphedema. For many years, there has been a widespread misconception that exercise could trigger or worsen lymphedema. However, research has shown that exercise is not only safe for breast cancer survivors, but may actually help reduce the risk of lymphedema, particularly in higher-risk patients.
Progressive resistance training and aerobic exercise are key strategies for survivors, and emerging research suggests that higher-intensity resistance training, performed several times per week, may help reduce lymphedema risk. This is an important counseling point for patients and an empowering message for survivors and thrivers.
I am honored to run Falmouth and fundraise for research that addresses this important issue faced by so many breast cancer survivors. I am grateful for the opportunity to raise awareness and support work that can improve quality of life after breast cancer. Thank you, Suzanne, for creating this amazing team!
