My Story…
I am running the Falmouth RR again on August 16th in honor of my good friend, Steve ("Marsh") Marshalek of of Dartmouth MA, who passed away after a courageous 2+ year battle with ALS. on May 17, 2026.
ALS, or Amyotrophic Laterals Sclerosis, is a brutal and progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. As the disease progresses, an ALS patient’s brain loses its ability to initiate and control muscle movement, and degeneration of the motor neurons in the spinal cord can gradually cause them to lose their ability to speak, eat, move and breathe. There is no known cure for ALS, and patients’ life expectancy ranges from just 2 to 5 years.
With Marsh’s passing fresh in my mind, my purpose in running again is to raise funds for the Peter Frates ALS Foundation, an organization I’ve become very close to over the past few years.
The Foundation, inspired by Pete Frates’ (the “Ice Bucket Challenge”) own valiant battle against ALS, provides critical financial assistance to ALS patients and their families here in MA and across the nation. These critical funds help ALS families navigate the overwhelming financial burdens of home care and other essential needs, while helping patients maintain dignity, quality of life, and community connection.
Thank you so much for supporting me, Team Frate Train, and the incredible work of the Peter Frates ALS Foundation. Together, we’re continuing Pete’s legacy and fighting for ALS families everywhere.
With sincere gratitude,
Steve
