My Story…
My story includes the absolute privilege I have had to be part of many people's lives who have SUD and who have known and loved someone with SUD. My work as a faculty member at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, in both undergraduate and graduate programs, is to help build strong relationships with those we care for and those who care for those with SUD. I currently work with Adult Gerontological Primary Care Nurse Practitioner Students at Gifford Wellness Center, which provides various medications for treatment of SUD. The clinical experience at Gifford Wellness provides students with an understanding of addiction as a disease, and the importance of the development of trust and communication between the provider and the patient through care that is nonstigmatizing and, as a result, provides the patient with the feeling of being heard and understood, which fosters the patient-provider relationship. Additionally, I practice one day a week at Prima-CARE in Fall River, Massachusetts, where I care for many patients with SUD. It is a privilege and honor to have them as my patients, and it provides me with great job satisfaction to care for them in my practice. Over the past 2 years, I have worked with mothers who care for their adult children with SUD, and this has been a very humbling experience, allowing me to listen to and connect with many mothers, which has really opened my eyes to their courage, resiliency, and unconditional love. Having met these mothers in my research, I feel I have grown as a person, as a faculty member, and as a health care provider.Lastly, I have referred many patients to Gosnold, a non-profit addiction and mental health treatment center, and it will be an honor to raise funds for those who work very hard to assist individuals with SUD by providing non-stigmatizing care that allows patients to feel heard and understood. Founded in Falmouth, MA in 1972, Gosnold is a mission-driven, award-winning treatment facility that offers a wide range of comprehensive treatment options for behavioral health and substance use disorders. Our mission is to excel in addiction and mental health treatment, to serve individuals and families affected by these illnesses, and to promote lasting recovery. Driven by a strong commitment to addressing the most urgent needs of the communities we serve, we believe that all people deserve access to high quality, compassionate care, regardless of their economic or social condition.
Some of our current programs and services include inpatient detoxification, residential rehabilitation programs, long-term sober living residences, partial hospital programs, intensive outpatient programs, individual, couples and family counseling, recovery coaching, emergency room navigation and family education/support programs. Each program is tailored to the patient’s individual needs.
While all health care providers struggle with insurance reimbursement rates, the challenge is particularly hard for nonprofit, mission-driven treatment centers like Gosnold. This is largely because of our steadfast commitment to treating all patients, regardless of their ability to pay. Many of our patients are uninsured or have insurance with low-reimbursing assistance benefits. While private and for-profit providers often turn away patients with plans that don't reimburse well, Gosnold strives to work with everyone, and this can present a significant financial challenge.
