Running for Kitty, and for Everyone Living with Cancer

Cancer has touched the lives of so many Canadians and their families, including mine. I have lost several family members to cancer, so this is a cause that is deeply personal to me.

This year, I am running in support of Melanoma Canada and in honour of my dear friend, Kitty Brown.

Kitty is a melanoma survivor, although she prefers to say that she is “living with cancer.” Her journey began in 2020 when she was diagnosed with melanoma. Through the Juravinski Cancer Centre in Hamilton, Kitty received multiple immunotherapy treatments that helped extend her life. She also underwent highly specialized CyberKnife radiation therapy to target tumours in her brain.

Today, six years later, Kitty continues to live with melanoma. She has regular CT scans of her body and brain to monitor her condition, which remains stable. Through everything she has faced, Kitty has shown incredible courage, strength, and hope.

What makes Kitty’s story even more inspiring is the way she has chosen to help others. She volunteers with Melanoma Canada, sharing her experience and providing peer-to-peer support to others who are living with melanoma.

Kitty has personally experienced the value of the support Melanoma Canada provides. In her words: “In a way that words cannot express, Melanoma Canada has offered me so much support through their website and social media pages, providing webinars, podcasts, cancer coaching, peer-to-peer support, and support groups." Donations help make these services available to patients and their families. Donations also fund initiatives such as the Mole Mobile, which travels to communities providing free skin checks and promoting early detection and appropriate follow-up.

I am proud to run this race for Kitty, for the family members I have lost, and for everyone who is currently living with cancer.
