My Story…
Last year I shared the story of our friend Steve. This year, I want to talk about Marcus.
Marcus isn’t a real person. But his story is. He could be any child. Any 12-year-old teenager. Any loved one whose morning started with laughter, grabbing a backpack, arguing over breakfast, rushing out the door with his bike like it was any other day.
The last thing Marcus heard that morning was laughter. It echoed down the hallway as he grabbed his backpack, rolling his eyes at his little sister dancing in the kitchen. His mom called out that he was late, toast still in the toaster. It was ordinary. Loud. Alive.
That’s what made the silence later so unbearable.
And then, everything changes with a massive school shooting. By noon, the school is surrounded by police officers. Sirens swallow the streets. Parents run faster than they ever thought they could, calling names that dissolve into chaos. Phones buzz. Rumors spread. Time stretches, sharp and endless.
Marcus never comes home!
At dinner that night, his chair stays empty. His sister doesn’t dance. The toast burns. An empty chair. A quiet room. A life that should have kept going but didn’t.
This is how gun violence steals from us! Not just lives, but futures. Birthdays that never happen. Dreams that never get spoken out loud. Ordinary mornings that never get their ordinary endings.
This is what it feels like for families across our country who has lived this horrible experience. Not headlines. Not statistics. But stolen moments, interrupted futures, and love with nowhere to go. Every day, more families are forced into this reality. But it doesn’t have to be this way. Every voice raised, every dollar given, every step taken is a way to rewrite stories like Marcus’s, so they don’t end in silence, but in possibility.
