My Story…

I am walking in honour of Lisa, Jennifer, Becca Jane, and Arthur Haberman this year. We miss them, and we want to honour their lives, their struggles, and our own stories. Here is a poem that I wrote as part of the 8-week DCOGT survivor support program.

Hand-me-downs January 2025

Sitting down to write, I looked for this book for a good 10 minutes before finding it on an obvious surface. I knew it would be close-by, taunting me.

My room is no longer filled with clothes of dead loved ones, waiting to be sorted. Now, I carry them with me, in my closet. They comfort me, reminding me that we are our relationships, that our relationships live on, past death.

Hand-me-downs are like the gold star of anti-capitalist materialism. Not for the love of buying stuff, but for the love of treasures.

Treasuring love...

In a pen,

a ring,

a sweater with her smell so painful it must be given away,

a pair of jeans from a living relative

Oh Yes

We can still share amongst the living, too, what a relief!
