My Story…
I was 49 when I suffered my acquired brain injury. By the time of this race, I will be 72. My injury was so severe that I had to relearn everything, but over the years have found my new normal. My wife has been my biggest supporter through it all. She’s spent years teaching me, guiding me, and showing incredible patience during even the hardest moments. I would not be where I am today without her. My four grandchildren, have also been my greatest teachers. Through them, I learned again how to play, laugh, be patient, and figure things out one step at a time. I tried returning to work a few times, but nothing really fit anymore. Participating in the HBIA 5K helps keep me healthy physically and mentally. As a fellow survivor, I understand the confusion, frustration, and invisible struggles that come with a brain injury. You may not see my injury, but it’s there every day. I may not remember who I was before, but I know who I am now, a survivor, grateful and loving life. — Jim
