This year I’m riding the 53-mile DeAthlon in honor of my mother-in-law, Sheila.

In December 2025, Sheila was diagnosed with breast cancer. She underwent a double mastectomy in April 2026 and, true to who she is, was back on her bike by June. After her reconstruction surgery in early July, she’s already counting down the days until she’s cleared to ride again later this summer.

If you know Sheila, that probably doesn’t surprise you.

Sheila is the reason I ride bikes in the first place. She taught me to ride at 26 years old, and for the past five years she’s been right beside me raising money to find a cure for Type 1 diabetes—a cause that’s especially personal to me as someone living with the disease. She’s spent countless hours supporting causes that matter to others, so it’s about DANG time we rally around her.

I’m riding to support the incredible work of the DeAngelo Williams Foundation, which is dedicated to the fight against breast cancer through prevention, early detection, research, and by providing free mammograms and financial assistance to uninsured and underinsured women. The foundation was created in honor of DeAngelo Williams’ mother and four aunts, all of whom lost their lives to breast cancer, and its mission is to help ensure more women have access to lifesaving screenings and care.

Early detection impacted Sheila’s outcomes SIGNIFICANTLY and I believe screening should be every woman’s right regardless of their socioeconomic situation.
