While I was pregnant with my second son, Callaway, I found a lump in my breast. After he was born, it was still there. I was told it could be a clogged duct, but something in my gut kept telling me it wasn’t right. I pushed for answers, and after a mammogram, ultrasound, and biopsy, I heard the words no 30-year-old mom with a toddler and a newborn expects to hear: invasive ductal carcinoma—stage 2 breast cancer. My world changed overnight. I went from soaking in life with my new baby to appointments, scans, surgeries, and figuring out how to fight cancer while still being a mom. I ultimately underwent a double mastectomy and began a five-year treatment journey. Cancer took a lot from me, physically and emotionally, but it also showed me just how strong I could be. My husband, my boys, my family, and the incredible people who surrounded me became my reason to keep going on the hardest days.
