What started as a simple doctor’s visit for a stomach ache turned into a life-changing diagnosis. In March, an ultrasound revealed concerning thyroid nodules that were just outside the guidelines. Something told me I couldn’t ignore it, so I learned to advocate for myself and push for more testing. At my endocrinology appointment, I was reassured it was likely nothing. On July 24, I expected to hear that I’d simply return in a year for monitoring. Instead, I was told my biopsy was positive for papillary thyroid carcinoma. A week later I met with my surgeon, and a month later I had surgery. Through it all, I was surrounded by love and support from family and friends. Their calls, messages, meals, and thoughtful gifts carried me through some difficult days. While thyroid cancer is often called the “best-case scenario of a worst-case diagnosis,” recovery hasn’t been easy. Months later, I’m still adjusting to medication and healing. But I’m moving forward with gratitude and strength.

I’ve also become a huge Arizona Diamondbacks fan after Natalie worked for the team over several seasons. So when I saw that the Diamondbacks were hosting a 5k Race for Caner, I knew I wanted to be part of it.

I’ve always joked that if you ever see me running, you should look behind me because something must be chasing me. This summer, that all changed. In the middle of a hot Arizona summer, I started waking up at 5 am to run. It has pushed me in ways I never expected, and crossing that finish line will represent so much more than completing a race.

I’m running in honor of my own journey, in gratitude for everyone who helped carry me through it, and in support of others facing cancer. Thank you for being part of my story and for helping me turn a difficult chapter into something meaningful.
