My Story…
Polio was eliminated in the US in 1979. I bet you haven't thought about it in years. But polio still exists, despite Rotary's 40+ year campaign to eradicate it worldwide. In that time, we've reduced the number of polio cases by 99.9%; there are 20 million people that did not contract paralytic polio; and 1.5 million of them did not succumb to the disease. Year-to-date, there have been just 22 cases (in Afghanistan and Pakistan). That doesn't mean we're safe - polio is insidious, and unless it is ERADICATED, another outbreak will only be a plane ride away.
On World Polio Day, October 24th, join me in a walk at Citizens Park in Barrington to both raise awareness of polio and funds for its eradication. You'll get some exercise, a t-shirt, some refreshments, and a receipt for a donation (for a portion of your entry fee) to The Rotary Foundation. Contact me if you have questions at ltstaab@kanrish.net or 845-671-1223.
