My Story…
4 years ago on August 29th, I was rushing out my back door to go get an update on a friend who had gone to the ER earlier that day. I literally tripped over my own feet and launched myself like a torpedo off our back steps, head first into our garage door. Scott took me to the ER where I got multiple CT scans which are great for ruling out a brain bleed but are totally uninformative for concussion. So home I went. Thankfully Scott worked for BIA-MA and we knew all about Brain injury since the ER did not even mention concussion. For the next week I laid low and tried to heal from the many bumps, bruises, aches, and pains. After a week, I headed back to work full time. For me that meant 40+ hours at my computer screen. Not a good mix. I thought I was doing ok but if you ask my kids or Scott or my coworkers - I wasn't myself. I was disorganized, forgetful, irritable, impatient, and boy did I have a headache. 24 hours a day! A little over a month later my primary put me on a reduced work schedule with a mandatory midday nap for 2 months. That made all the difference. I returned to full time work shortly before Christmas. Today I feel like things are pretty much returned to normal but I have a slightly reduced tolerance for stress and fatigue. The entire experience was frightening and humbling. I'm thankful that organizations like BIA-MA help educate people about all forms of brain injury including the often minimized Concussion. Please donate to help them continue their work!
