Migraine is not "just a headache" but a serious neurological disease with acute attacks ranging from mild to severely debilitating that can over time become progressive in both frequency and severity of attacks, including potentially becoming a chronic condition with significant disability and profound impacts one’s life, self-esteem, family and livelihood.
The WHO ranks migraine among the top 20 causes in the world of years of healthy life lost to disability. However although over 37 million people in the US suffer from migraine, more than diabetes and asthma combined, migraine research is vastly underfunded, receiving only $13M of NIH funding per year while diabetes and asthma receive $1.037B and $294M respectively.
Mission Statement: Our mission is to help improve the lives of patients and their families & ultimately to help find a cure for migraine. To achieve this we will i) create "big noise" in the community and raise the awareness of migraine and headache disorder as more than "just a headache" and ii) build a support community to improve the lives of patients and their families. Ultimately we hope to be part of the community of people and organizations that help find a cure for migraine.
Race Series: Since 2008 Miles for Migraine has produced four race events in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park and one in Mountain View (each with a 2-mile walk and 5K /10K run). These races are a key part of our strategy to grow awareness and build a migraine support community. With one in four American families impacted by migraine we know that there is a huge population to get behind our cause.
