The St. Vincent Catholic Charities Welcoming the Stranger: 5K Family Fun Run is the kick-off event for Lansing's World Refugee Awareness Week!
A refugee is a person who "owing to a well-founded fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group, or political opinion, is outside the country of his nationality, and is unable to or, owing to such fear, is unwilling to avail himself of the protection of that country"
-United Nations Convention relating to the Rights of Refugees of 1951
The objective of this event is to raise awareness and collect household goods to support the St. Vincent Catholic Charities Refugee Services program. This program provides safe and furnished housing to newly arriving refugees. In 2013, STVCC resettled 699 refugees in the greater Lansing area. Our agency relies heavily on donations to guarantee each family has everything they need to start their new life in Lansing.
Any and all are welcome to participate, come out and support refugees in our community!
